Sunbeam Programmable Bread Maker Review

The Sunbeam 5891 is one of the largest automatic bread makers available on the market. At a length of 19 inches, it takes up a lot of room in your kitchen. If you have the space, though, it offers convenient features with an easy-to-use programmable menu and a consistent express bake option.

This bread machine has a thick, plastic outer shell with a gray menu on the front of the unit. You can program the cooking cycle with six colored buttons and the display is easy to read. The top lid flips up for adding ingredients and there is a small viewing window to check the progress of the loaf. This bread making machine requires you to lift the lid when adding ingredients mid-cycle, which could let out heat.

The menu is an attractive feature on this bread maker. It’s displayed in the front of the machine, which is different from the majority of bread makers that place the menu on top. The buttons pop out of the machine, offering a nice texture, and the LED is easy to read. With such a big menu comes a much bigger size, however. The Sunbeam is nearly 20 pounds and doesn’t have handles on its outer shell to make it easier for you to move around.

The bread maker has 12 cooking functions, three crust shade selections and a 13-hour delayed baking option. There are only two loaf sizes: 1 1/2 pounds or 2 pounds. It’s as wide as it is tall, meaning that when you choose either size, you get a tall loaf instead of the rectangle loaves you see at grocery stores.

The express bake cycle available on the Sunbeam 5891 promises fresh bread in under an hour. The bread will tend to be rougher when using this mode, so, if you have the time, it’s better to wait the extra couple of hours. Sunbeam offers a one-year warranty on the bread maker as well, which is nice when you’re using a single paddle bread machine. The Sunbeam 5891 has a convenient display you can see without having to stand on a stepstool, a full range of programmable features and the ability to make fresh bread in less than an hour. It will take up a lot of space on your counter, but it's one of the best bread makers if you have the room for it.
